About Us
The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine Limited (ACRRM) is an accredited specialty medical college responsible for setting and maintaining professional standards for specialist general practitioners and rural generalists in Australia.
Nationally, ACRRM has more than 6,000 members, including Fellows, trainees and associate members, who live and work in rural, remote and First Nations communities across Australia. Members provide expert front line medical care in a diverse range of settings including general practices, hospitals, emergency departments, Aboriginal health services and other remote settings such as RFDS and the Australian Antarctic Division.
ACRRM’s core business is training and assessing specialist general practitioners for a rural generalist scope of practice, setting clinical standards for rural generalist practice; and support and advocacy services for rural, remote and First Nations communities and the health teams that serve them. Its vision is “Healthy rural, remote and First Nations communities through excellence, social accountability and innovation”.
The company’s headquarters is positioned in Brisbane, Queensland although the majority of staff work flexibly from state, regional or rural locations across the country. ACRRM offices are also located in Adelaide, Perth, Bunbury, Bendigo, Wodonga, Rockhampton, Townsville, Darwin and Wollongong.

Non- Executive Director
The Role
The College is seeking expressions of interest for two board-appointed Non-Executive Director positions. These are essential governance roles that offer the opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction and long-term success of a respected educational institution.
College Council-appointed director appointments are determined at the sole discretion of the College Council and decisions are not subject to reconsideration, review or appeal.
All directors are required to:
attend at least six meetings each year
attend a minimum of three College Council meetings
participate in strategic, governance and business planning for the College
attend the Annual General Meeting
attend Special General Meetings, if required
participate in committees or ad hoc working parties from time to time, if required
The duties of directors are:
The Duty of Care and Diligence
to act with care and diligence as would a reasonable person in like circumstance
The Duty of Loyalty
to act in good faith, in the best interests of the organisation and for a proper purpose
to avoid conflicts of interest
to not misuse the position
to not misuse information; and
to retain independence and objectivity in judgment
Other Specific Duties
to prevent insolvent trading
the duty of continuous disclosure
the duty to disclose related party transactions; and
the duty to disclose director's interests
Extraordinary Duties
Extraordinary duties include representation of the College on outside bodies, participation in meetings, courses and events which specifically require the attendance of a director and where outcomes of such events would be seen by any reasonable person to benefit the Board in its operation and/or the College as a whole.
Board Skills, Attributes and Experience
The ACRRM Board is a skills-based board comprising directors who collectively have the skills, knowledge and experience to effectively govern and direct the organisation.
The skills and attributes required of directors can be broadly categorised as follows:
governance skills (i.e. skills directly relevant to performing the Board’s key functions);
industry skills (i.e. skills relevant to the organisation and sector in which the college predominantly operates);
a commitment to rural and remote health, in alignment with the College's values;
personal attributes or qualities that are generally considered desirable to be an effective director; and
have a broad understanding of the Australian health care system with specific regard to general practice, primary care and population health principles and particularly when delivered in rural remote areas.
These are strategic, governance-focused roles ideal for individuals passionate about rural, remote and First Nations healthcare and committed to strengthening Australia’s primary care system.
The Board as a whole should also encompass desirable diversity in aspects such as gender, age, culture and/or different perspectives. As part of the current consideration of the board’s skills matrix process, preference will be provided to applicants who can demonstrate skills, experience, or capability in the following areas:
finance
risk management
lived experience of accessing medical services in a rural, remote or First Nations community
digital health
innovation
business development
information and technology governance.

Remuneration and benefits:

Non-executive director: $24,336
Chairs of Nominations, FARM and People and Culture Committees: $29,203
Deputy Chair of the Board: $36,504
Combined College President and Chair of Board: $121,680
College President (separate from role of Chair of Board): $73,008
Chair of Board (separate from role of President): $48,672

The College will meet the costs of all Board related travel, accommodation and other relevant out of pocket expenses associated with the requirements of this position.
Director professional development training is also provided and or paid for, as agreed by the Board.
