About the Role
Deputy Director-General
As the Deputy Director-General, you will:
Provide visionary, values-based leadership and management across Queensland’s eight education regions to support school and regional operations and performance to over 1264 state schools.
Build whole system accountability for student outcomes and school improvement through robust monitoring, review and cross-divisional mechanisms to ensure ongoing progress.
Lead place-based solutions and facilitate collaboration across eight education regions to ensure consistent performance frameworks across the Department of Education’s service delivery.
Provide strategic leadership and support with accountability to facilitate the implementation of operations across all eight regions.
Ensure efficient delivery of high-quality services and the delivery of planned outcomes in line with the department’s vision, values and strategic direction for schools and regions.
Drive government reforms to improve student outcomes through evidence-based initiatives and strong partnerships.
Lead and provide direction through disaster and emergency management.
Role Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The position requires strong professional leadership and management capabilities. The role requires an ability to lead and manage School and Regional Operations and Performance to deliver government priorities along with excellence in client service delivery.
The Deputy Director-General is to provide high level leadership particularly by working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
As an executive your performance will be assessed according to four key accountability perspectives: financial, stakeholder and outcome, internal business, and learning and growth.
Financial
Lead and direct the efficient use of human, financial and physical resources of the division to ensure the effective delivery of services and the achievement of government commitments and priorities.
Stakeholder and outcome
Lead and drive Queensland Government reforms in the education sector to improve the quality of education and lift learning outcomes for Queensland students.
Build and sustain effective relationships and partnerships at a State and National level with government agencies, key client groups, significant stakeholders and the public in relation to departmental interests.
Represent the interests of the Director-General in negotiations and high-level forums on issues within the portfolio responsibilities of the Minister to secure best possible outcomes for Queensland state schooling.
Internal business
Provide high-quality strategic advice to the Minister and Director-General on matters of education services strategy, planning and direction.
Lead and influence the development and implementation of major policy initiatives ensuring management practices are consistent with contemporary best practice.
Lead and oversee to the successful co-ordination, implementation and integration of major organisational reform initiatives impacting on service delivery across the state schools sector.
Contribute to the effective functioning of the department and the achievement of its vision as a member of the Executive Management Board.
Learning and growth
Provide leadership and change management in the development and implementation of innovative policy and programs relating to meeting the current and emerging education needs in the Queensland economy and society.
Foster an environment that values customers, innovation, high performance, accountability and people in the delivery of high-quality services.
Person requirements
The position requires a person who will take personal responsibility for serving the government of the day and meeting the needs of the people and communities of Queensland. As an executive you will work towards a system of world class service delivery and public sector management.
You will have a record of success as a leader in a large and complex organisation with outstanding leadership ability.
You will have extensive experience across the public, private and/or not for profit sector and you will have a strong background in strategy and policy implementation, service delivery, and client service. You will have a proven track record as an agent of change in challenging environments and in fostering a confident and capable workforce.
Selection competencies
As a leader in Queensland Government you will display outstanding judgement, high level integrity, strong agility to adapt to a constantly changing environment, a strong achievement orientation, and excellent communication and negotiation skills in line with the Leadership Competencies for Queensland.
