What we do
We help guide key government decisions across areas like social issues, the economy, law and justice, the environment and planning. We support whole of government efforts by working in partnership with agencies to deliver on government's major strategies and priorities.
The main services we provide include:
Government Decision Support: We provide broad expertise to support the implementation of the government's priorities.
Government Service Delivery Implementation Support: We work across the public sector to improve how services are delivered and ensure they align with government goals.
Governance Support and Advisory Services: We help maintain strong, accountable government by offering advice on constitutional, legal, public administration, and protocol matters to the Premier, ministers, and the public sector.
Queensland Veterans: We create strategies and policies, deliver programs and provide insightful advice to support the veterans' community within Queensland.
Communications and Media Support: We lead strategic communication, public engagement, media and events to keep Queenslanders informed and connected.
Legislative Drafting and e-Publishing: We draft high-quality legislation and make sure it's easily accessible to the public.
Deputy Director-General, Strategic Communications
The role
In this unique role, you'll spearhead sector-wide strategic communications and media efforts aligning them with the Queensland Government’s vision and priorities.
Your strategic foresight and stakeholder engagement expertise will be instrumental in guiding and influencing other agencies through established communities of practice.
Anticipating shifts in communication trends, you will adeptly position the sector and the department to navigate and thrive in a dynamic environment, while managing risks.
As head of the Crisis Communication Network, you will direct a rapid and effective response during emergencies.
You are responsible for department’s complete communications strategy and delivery.
What you’ll be doing
In this role you will get the opportunity to:
Provide critical strategic guidance to the Director-General and high level stakeholders and leaders on government communications.
Oversee all internal and external communications, including media, crisis communications, advertising, digital, and engagement strategies and activities.
Proactively identify complex or emerging issues, adjusting communication strategies and responses to manage risks and ensure objectives are met.
Build and sustain social licence in the execution of communications, campaigns and community engagement.
Drive innovation and the adoption and enhancement of contemporary delivery methods to augment customer and client experiences.
Develop and strengthen collaborative stakeholder relationships.
Lead a Community of Practice program to elevate sector-wide communication capability and consistency, and foster continuous sector-wide improvement.
Evaluate and refine the effectiveness of strategies and plans through qualitative and quantitative measures to optimise performance and outcomes.
Lead and empower a team of communication experts to innovate and achieve clear objectives, promoting an agile, safe, inclusive, and integrity-driven workplace culture.
Lead whole of government communication networks including chairing the sector’s Crisis Communication Network, serving as a key advisor during critical events.
Represent the department on influential stakeholder forums and committees, reinforcing key relationships and strategic interests.

To be successful in this role you will have:
Extensive experience in strategic communications including media, crisis communications, advertising, digital, and engagement activities.
Proven success in an executive leadership role as a change agent, driving a culture of collaboration and participation.
Exceptional interpersonal and negotiation skills and experience dealing with a broad range of stakeholders.
Resilience and the ability to thrive under pressure, especially in critical and significant situations.
The capacity to travel and work outside standard business hours as required.
Possession of relevant tertiary qualifications in public administration, public policy, communications or a related discipline will be highly regarded.
