About the RNA
The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) is a member based not-for-profit organisation embedded in nearly 150 years of history. First established in 1875 to deliver the first ‘Intercolonial Exhibition of 1876’, the show developed into the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) which continues to be Queensland’s most anticipated yearly event and continues to achieve its aim of connecting Queenslanders of all ages - from the country to the city and from all walks of life.
Along with the iconic Ekka, the organisation runs the Royal Queensland Awards (RQA), a series of six individual competitions unearthing the best produce in Australia. The historic Brisbane Showgrounds is also a venue business which hosts more than 250 events each year from music festivals to corporate functions and gala dinners, and is home to the state-of-the-art Royal International Convention Centre.

Health, Safety and Risk Manager
About the role
The Health, Safety and Risk Manager is responsible for providing strategic health, safety and risk advice and for the development of resources that ensure best practice approaches and risk management systems for the RNA, including the Royal International Convention Centre and the RNA Showgrounds and its precincts. It has a focus on risk management such as hazard identification, risk assessment, all facets of risk control, and follow up monitoring, review and consultation.
The role requires strong liaison with RNA staff and councillors, government regulators and relevant industry bodies to ensure that the RNA has a sound safety culture which is compliant with contemporary safety trends, processes and procedures.
The role will lead the ongoing development of the RNA’s Risk Management processes, Safety Culture, Health, Safety and Wellbeing Management System, and develop and deliver health and safety training as required.
Your opportunity
As the Health, Safety and Risk Manager, you will:
Develop and implement the RNA’s annual Health Safety and Wellbeing Management Plan including the coordination of the processes around the maintenance of the Corporate Risk Register and oversight of Risk Committees.
Ensure monitoring systems and evaluations are implemented and maintained.
Monitor health and safety processes to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and policy.
Project manage strategic risk &/or safety-related projects as required, including specific research aimed at delivering contemporary, best practice, compliant initiatives.
Advise and support line managers through the RNA Injury Management Rehabilitation policy and procedures.
Influence, coach, and consult with all stakeholders to provide integrated technical and strategic advice
Support the senior management accountability for risk & safety and the reduction of lost time injuries through leadership, direction and expert counsel.
Develop and maintain the RNA’s Health and Safety management reporting framework including incident reporting.
Lead the development and implementation of an annual Internal Safety Communications Plan including toolbox talks, Safety Library, Safety Noticeboards, Safety Awareness Week, monthly all-staff meetings, to reinforce safety communications and the safety management system.
Contribute to the development and implementation of on-line and face-to-face training programs including induction and annual compliance training.
Coordinate and Chair the RNA OHS Committee and provide Secretariat role to the RNA Risk Committee
Standard Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Achieve and maintain high professional standards for the benefit of the RNA, it’s clients and patrons;
Protect the RNA’s property; and
Carry out such other duties as are incidental to the proper performance of your duties or that the RNA may reasonably require based on the operational requirements of the Business.
What we are looking for
The ideal candidate must have relevant tertiary qualifications as well as a minimum 5 years of Workplace Health, Safety & Risk management experience and minimum 3 years’ experience in a strategic development role.
You will also have:
Demonstrated experience in managing or advising on risk management in an events, hospitality, property or building services industry.
Expert background in designing the WHS management strategy and framework with critical risk control management including the development of policies and procedures.
Established skill in project management and implementing a comprehensive Health Safety and Wellbeing program.
Thorough knowledge of the requirements for generating a lasting behavioural based Safety Culture
Ability to facilitate risk and incident investigation mediated by analysis of evidence, conceptual/technical knowledge, experience and critical thought.
Experience in working with Government regulators and industry stakeholders
Strong relationship management and influencing skills
Excellent conflict resolution skills.
