Delivering Queensland’s Tourism Future
The Queensland Government’s Destination 2045 plan will position our state as a global leader in tourism, supporting richer visitor experiences, more jobs and better infrastructure.
The next 20 years present a once-in-a-generation opportunity to grow tourism in Queensland and showcase our state on the global stage.
We’ll make Queensland a world leader in ecotourism, creating 45 new ecotourism experiences by 2045. We’ll connect our regions by road, rail, air and sea and attract events featuring the world’s biggest names in music, art, sport and culture.
The Destination 2045 plan will deliver benefits for Queenslanders, their communities, industry and visitors.

Purpose
The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring Queensland is a must visit destination for domestic and internal travellers.
As the Deputy Director-General, you will lead the division responsible for driving the implementation of Destination 2045 – Queensland’s Tourism Future. You will work in partnership with industry and stakeholders across all levels of government to deliver world-class events and experiences, at heart of which is sustainable eco-tourism – leveraging our natural wonders for current and future generations.
The role
As the Deputy Director-General, you will:
Provide strategic leadership, direction and coordination of the Department’s Tourism portfolio to achieve the goals of Destination 2045, creating a shared vision to unlock our untapped lifestyle and culture, and maximise the legacy opportunities of hosting the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games (the Games).
Advise the Minister, Director-General, the Executive Leadership Team, and other Senior Executives about the development and effectiveness of strategies, programs and services to grow the Queensland tourism industry and enhance tourism experiences.
Engage, partner, and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders including industry, government, investors and infrastructure providers to unlock the untapped potential of our state by boosting ecotourism, attracting new investment, delivering world-class experiences and events, connecting our regions, and leveraging the Games legacy opportunities.
Develop and champion strategies to attract, build and retain knowledge, experience, and talent within Queensland to support and enable a tourism industry that delivers lasting benefits for Queensland.
Represent the government, department, Minister, and Director-General with credibility and respect in complex negotiations and consultations with government agencies, industry stakeholders, and community, including Indigenous groups, to address the needs of both government and the community.
Model the vision, culture and values of DETSI, fostering collaboration, setting clear priorities and performance expectations and creating an environment that attracts and retains the best talent.
What you need for this role
For this role, you’ll need to:
be an agile and inspirational leader, with a strong track record of achievement in dynamic and complex organisations.
have extensive experience in tourism strategy, service delivery, program funding and resource management, client service and relationship management.
demonstrate your experience leading major initiatives and programs that have delivered real and lasting change.
demonstrate significant implementation experience and business acumen to drive delivery, manage risk, and achieve greater impact and value for money.
be a compelling communicator and advocate, able to represent the department persuasively, and build effective relationships with a broad range of partners and stakeholders with a client focus, demonstrating high level consultation, negotiation, coordination and public relations skills.
role model Executive leadership behaviours as outlined in the Leadership competencies for Queensland including demonstrating how you can contribute to our culture of safety, inclusion and respect.
