What you can expect in this role

The Deputy Director-General, Corporate Services plays a pivotal role in supporting the Director-General to deliver high-quality outcomes for the Queensland Government. This senior executive position provides strategic leadership across the department’s corporate services portfolio, which includes Finance, Human Resources, Communication, Legal, Information and Technology Services, and Governance, as well as operational oversight of Internal Audit.

This role demands exceptional leadership and management capabilities, with a focus on driving innovation, efficiency, and accountability. The Deputy Director-General will provide high-level strategic advice and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including senior executives and business area leaders, to deliver on government priorities and ensure seamless service delivery.

Key to this role is the ability to develop and implement future-focused strategies that enhance workforce capability, build organisational capacity, and align resources with departmental objectives. The successful candidate will foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and high performance, ensuring the department is well-positioned to meet current and future challenges.

What you will be doing:

  • Lead and direct the effective use of human, financial, and physical resources to deliver services efficiently and sustainably, while ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.

  • Provide executive leadership in the operations of the Corporate Services Division, including financial administration, strategic planning, budgeting, and effective staff management.

  • Provide high-level, expert strategic advice to the Minister, Director-General, and senior managers on financial management, governance, risk management and organisational performance.

  • Represent the department in dealings with central agencies and whole-of-government forums, particularly on financial management, governance, and audit matters.

  • Provide strategic leadership in the delivery of corporate services, driving innovation, efficiency, and accountability to enhance organisational performance and achieve business outcomes.

  • Identify opportunities for efficiencies and cost savings and ensure an integrated, whole-of-department approach to corporate service delivery.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration and cooperation across the department to ensure seamless service delivery, improved organisational capability, and high-quality outcomes.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including Ministers, Director-General, central agencies, unions, and other government agencies.

  • Drive workforce initiatives to create a high-performance, positive, and engaged work environment, aligned with departmental values and focused on continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of strategies to build organisational capability, including customer-centric digital transformation and service reform.

What we are looking for

As a leader in the Queensland Government, you will display outstanding judgement, high-level integrity, strong agility to adapt to a constantly changing environment, a strong achievement orientation and excellent communication and negotiating skills.

You will have:

  • a record of success as a leader in a large and complex organisation with outstanding leadership ability

  • extensive experience across the public, private and/or not-for-profit sector and you will have a strong background in strategy implementation as well as service delivery and client service transformation

  • have a proven track record as an agent of change in challenging environments and in fostering a confident and capable workforce.

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following 12 leadership competencies considered critical in the performance of executive roles in the Queensland public service, focusing on three areas:
