General Manager, Callide Power Station

 

About the role

The General Manager of Callide Power Station is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of the station's operations, ensuring the safe, reliable, and commercially effective production of electricity. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the General Manager will execute the company vision through strong leadership of the site’s teams, with a focus on the health, safety, and wellbeing of all employees.

The General Manager will ensure Callide’s assets are commercially optimised for both efficiency and longevity, capable of meeting short-term reliability and profitability targets without compromising long-term asset value and viability.

The General Manager will operate within a unionised environment and in line with the Enterprise Agreement, fostering respectful relationships while ensuring compliance and a positive workplace culture. With strong operational discipline, the General Manager will lead a large, multidisciplinary team and build effective stakeholder relationships and drive outcomes that support the organisation’s strategic goals.

 

Role Responsibilities

 

Key Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

    • Creates a safe and supportive culture focused on health, wellbeing and positive environmental outcomes.

    • Empowers and resources managers to support appropriate training and development of their team members.

    • Takes responsibility for your own safety and wellbeing.

    • Encourages direct reports to actively support the safety and wellbeing of their team members.

    • Never compromises process safety, personal safety or environment outcomes, for production.

    • Takes accountability for team process safety and HSE performance.  

    • Confirms process safety, personal safety and environment systems and processes are utilised effectively to mitigate risks. 

    • Regularly monitors process safety, personal safety and environment performance and follows up to ensure gaps are addressed.

    • Confirms process safety, personal safety and environmental compliance obligations are understood and met on time.

    • Champions implementation of the process safety and HS&E standards, policies and procedures.

    • Identifies opportunities for improvement & applies structured, problem-solving methodology.

    • Works collaboratively to explore alternative ideas and options.

    • Actively seeks feedback from others to ensure goal alignment.

    • Identifies issues that may impede achievement of work or business outcomes.

    • Champions innovative solutions to improve team performance.

    • Clearly defines service offering of department or project to improve competitive advantage, market share, profitability.

    • Supports managers to address performance issues through robust performance conversations.

    • Role models responsible, commercial behaviours.

    • Ensures required resources and skills are in place to meet objectives.

    • Integrates ideas and needs of others when developing feasible strategies to achieve goals.

    • Monitors and evaluates progress and success against performance standards.

    • Ensures deadlines are met and keeps stakeholders informed of current status.

    • Clarifies roles and responsibilities, deliverables, milestones, limits for independent decision-making, and needs and desires of the primary customers.

    • Copes well and helps others deal with the ongoing demands of change; sees and shows others the benefits of change.

    • Identifies business critical roles and ensures successors are in place.

    • Monitors and measures performance improvements and communicates outcomes.

    • Equips teams to evaluate benefits and risk with regards to new ideas and innovative approaches.

    • Works to create a strong team by treating all staff fairly and consistently.

What we are looking for

 

To succeed in this role, you will need:

    • Degree level qualifications in a relevant discipline including Engineering, Science or Human Resource Management or relevant qualification and significant experience at a senior management level within power stations

    • Post-graduate qualifications would be advantageous.

    • Proven success in a senior leadership role leading large teams in the energy or other asset intensive industry.

    • Extensive knowledge and experience in power station operations and management would be an advantage.

    • The ability to develop and execute long-term strategies and drive positive business outcomes.

    • Exceptional people leadership and communication skills, with a focus on building capability, engagement, and collaborative culture.

    • Demonstrated achievement of safety leadership in an asset intensive business.

    • Strong business acumen, commercial judgement and stakeholder management skills.

    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across all levels of the organisation and with external stakeholders.

    • Thrives in complex, fast-paced environments and is dedicated to leading and implementing strategic organisational changes in response to business needs.
