About Us

The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine Limited (ACRRM) is an accredited specialty medical college responsible for setting and maintaining professional standards for specialist general practitioners and rural generalists in Australia.     

Nationally, ACRRM has more than 7000 members, including Fellows, trainees and associate members, who live and work in rural, remote and First Nations communities across Australia. Members provide expert front line medical care in a diverse range of settings including general practices, hospitals, emergency departments, Aboriginal health services and other remote settings such as RFDS and the Australian Antarctic Division.

ACRRM’s core business is training and assessing specialist general practitioners for a rural generalist scope of practice, setting clinical standards for rural generalist practice; and support and advocacy services for rural, remote and First Nations communities and the health teams that serve them.  Its vision is “Healthy rural, remote and First Nations communities through excellence, social accountability and innovation”.

The company’s headquarters is located in Brisbane, Queensland although the majority of staff work flexibly from state, regional or rural locations in each State and Territory.

About the Role

Chief Financial Officer

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for safeguarding and enhancing ACRRM’s financial sustainability, governance and organisational performance. As a key member of the executive team, the CFO provides strategic financial leadership and advice to the CEO, business leaders, board and Finance, Audit and Risk Management (FARM) Committee, supporting informed decision-making and the achievement of ACRRM’s strategic objectives.

The CFO leads the organisation’s financial strategy, planning, reporting, investment oversight and business performance functions, while ensuring strong financial governance, risk management, compliance and accountability. The role oversees financial operations, treasury, procurement, assets and funding arrangements, and works closely with leaders across the organisation to strengthen financial capability, drive performance and support sustainable growth within ACRRM’s for-purpose environment.

This key leadership role requires a highly collaborative and strategic approach, grounded in transparency, integrity and forward thinking. The CFO must lead by example, building trust within their team and across the organisation, empowering others through clear communication, timely advice, mentorship and professional development.  ACRRM has expanded rapidly in recent years and as a result, this role also has a significant emphasis on uplifting the financial literacy and commercial acumen of leaders across the organisation which operates with multiple and varied funding sources. 

Duties & Responsibilities

Key accountabilities of the role include:

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Develop and lead ACRRM’s financial strategy, ensuring alignment with the strategic plan, operating priorities and long-term sustainability objectives.

  • Provide strategic financial advice to the CEO, COO, Board, Governance Committees and Executive Leadership Team to support effective planning, decision making and risk management.

  • Contribute as a member of the Executive Leadership Team to shape whole of organisation strategy, governance, performance and organisational leadership.

  • Identify financial opportunities, risks and trends that may impact the College’s performance, sustainability or strategic direction.

  • Assess, monitor and report funding concentration risks associated with government funding arrangements.

  • Deliver financial modelling, scenario analysis and robust risk assessments to evaluate the sustainability of new business models, grants and strategic initiatives.

Treasury & Cashflow Management

  • Provide strategic advice on investment management, reserves, funding strategies and capital allocation.

  • Manage relationships with banks, investment advisors, insurers and other financial service providers.

  • Monitor and optimise daily, short-term, and long-term liquidity to guarantee all operational commitments, grant requirements and capital expenditures are funded.

  • Optimise working capital and the cash conversion cycles by monitoring collections and managing supplier payment timelines.

  • Establish robust cash flow forecasting to simulate multiple operational funding scenarios and prevent cash shortfalls.

  • Design and execute the organisation’s investment policies, managing capital allocation strategies and deploying surplus cash reserves into secure, yield bearing instruments.

  • Implement rigorous internal security controls, segregation of duties, and specialised systems to safeguard treasury assets against misappropriation or cyber fraud.

Operational Economics & Business Intelligence

  • Develop meaningful executive and Board reporting that integrates financial, operational and strategic performance measures.

  • Develop and maintain integrated financial and operational performance indicators, dashboards and reporting tools to support executive and Board decision making.

  • Partner with the business to measure and track non-financial operational drivers (such as training, member growth, retention, and regional completion rates) against financial outcomes.

  • Strengthen organisational reporting capability through business intelligence and reporting tools.

  • Improve data quality, governance and financial information management practices.

Financial Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Oversee the annual budgeting process, including the development of budget assumptions, financial models, forecasts and executive recommendations.

  • Provide clear financial analysis and advice to support business planning, investment decisions, resource allocation and performance improvement.

  • Monitor financial performance against budget, forecast and strategic targets, identifying risks, variances and opportunities for improvement.

  • Partner with executives and senior leaders to build financial literacy, budget ownership and commercial acumen and discipline across the College.

Financial Governance, Risk and Compliance

  • Ensure ACRRM has robust financial governance frameworks, policies, controls and delegations that support accountability and compliance.

  • Oversee implementation and monitoring of management actions from internal and external audit findings.

  • Support organisational readiness for DGR status and associated governance, reporting and compliance requirements.

  • Ensure financial frameworks support ACNC obligations and future donor accountability requirements where applicable.

  • Oversee compliance with relevant financial, tax, accounting, audit, statutory and regulatory obligations.

  • Lead the identification, assessment and management of financial risks, including liquidity, funding, investment, procurement, fraud and internal control risks.

  • Ensure financial decisions and practices are consistent with approved delegations, policies, governance requirements and Board expectations.

  • Provide financial risk reporting and advice to the CEO, COO, Board, Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee and other relevant governance committees.

Financial Reporting and Performance

  • Oversee the preparation of accurate, timely and meaningful financial reports for the CEO, executive, FARM and board.

  • Lead the preparation of annual financial statements and manage the external audit process.

  • Ensure financial reports provide clear insight into performance, risks, trends, cash flow, financial sustainability and strategic implications.

  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy and transparency of financial data, records and reporting.

Procurement, Property and Commercial Management

  • Lead the development and oversight of procurement activities, ensuring purchasing decisions are transparent, value for money and aligned with policy.

  • Provide financial and commercial advice on major contracts, supplier arrangements, funding agreements and strategic partnerships.

  • Support contract review and negotiation processes by assessing financial implications, commercial risks and long term obligations.

  • Strengthen procurement governance, supplier management and expenditure controls across the College.

  • Ensure material supplier and contract risks are appropriately assessed and reported.

  • Oversee the financial management of assets, leases, property, insurance and other significant financial commitments.

Financial Systems, Processes and Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure financial systems, reporting platforms and financial data governance frameworks support organisational decision making.

  • Lead the ongoing improvement of financial systems, processes and reporting capability.

  • Ensure finance systems are effective, secure, fit for purpose and able to support accurate reporting and organisational decision making.

  • Lead finance-related transformation projects, including system upgrades, process redesign and automation initiatives.

  • Support digital enablement initiatives that improve reporting, efficiency and organisational decision-making. 

People, Culture and Leadership

  • Lead, coach and develop the Finance team to deliver high quality, responsive and trusted financial services.

  • Build a finance function that is strategic, service oriented, commercially aware and focused on enabling organisational performance.

  • Build financial literacy, accountability and performance management capability across the organisation.

  • Act as a trusted advisor to leaders across ACRRM in financial and strategic decision-making.

  • Conduct regular performance reviews and implement development plans for the Finance team. ​

  • Identify training and development needs to build internal capability.

  • Live and breathe ACRRM’s values and brand, act with integrity and ensure that all members of the team are treated with dignity and respect.

What Success Looks Like

The key qualifications, experience and skills required for the role include:

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline.

  • CPA or CA qualification

Experience

  • Significant senior financial leadership experience at CFO, Finance Director, Head of Finance or equivalent level.

  • Proven ability to translate complex financial and operational information into clear insights and recommendations for executive and board decision-making.

  • Extensive experience leading governance, audit, risk, assurance and internal control frameworks.

  • Demonstrated expertise in budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling, planning and reporting.

  • Strong experience supporting strategic planning, business cases, investment decisions, asset and supplier management, and organisational performance improvement.

  • Proven ability to prepare high-quality board papers, proposals and reports with practical, strategic recommendations.

  • Extensive experience in governance, compliance and statutory reporting within the for-purpose sector.

  • Demonstrated success supporting boards and executive teams through organisational growth, transformation and change.

  • Strong track record of leading, developing and coaching high-performing finance and business teams.

  • Experienced executive leader with a proven ability to operate effectively within high-performing leadership teams.

  • Extensive experience working with Boards and Audit, Risk and Finance Committees within complex governance environments.

Desirable

  • Experience with specialist medical college, education, healthcare or member-based environments

  • Experience in leading complex teams in diverse organisations with remote working arrangements, and fostering positive team culture, productive workplace performance and environments

  • Experience in financial management for charity or philanthropy sectors.

  • Experience working with organisations receiving significant government funding, including funding agreement compliance, performance monitoring and complex grant acquittal processes.
