About the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers

The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers is at the forefront of driving sustainable growth across Queensland.

Their purpose is to deliver innovative strategies and responsive services that enable an empowered local government sector, water infrastructure and resource management which drives economic growth and a reinvigorated volunteering sector.

With over 800 dedicated professionals in more than 30 offices across the state, they work tirelessly to ensure that Queensland's communities, businesses, and water resources thrive.

The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers delivers the following services:

Local Government governance support and administration of funding programs
The department supports an empowered and sustainable local government sector, including through legislative and regulatory reform, integrity, governance and sustainability capacity building and advice, and the administration of funding programs.

Water infrastructure and resource management
The department leads water resource management and infrastructure development to achieve sustainably managed water resources that ensure safe, reliable and affordable water supplies for Queensland communities and businesses, grow economic development opportunities, and support thriving critical ecosystems.

Volunteering
The department leads volunteering policy and partners with the sector to remove barriers, support growth, uplift capability and promote volunteering.

As Director-General of the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers you will play a significant role in influencing the execution and successful delivery of the Queensland Government objectives for the community that reflect the government’s vision for Queensland and outline our plan to build future prosperity and growth across the state.

Your Responsibilities

As Director-General, leading the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers you will:

  • provide strategic leadership that demonstrates a clear and compelling vision of communication, governance and values-based management to the department and its employees

  • preserve and build productive working relationships with stakeholders, identifying tactful and diplomatic management practices to support their differing and competing requirements and priorities

  • mobilise effective and efficient governance, administration and operation of the department, fostering an environment of accountability for the performance of its functions and associated outcomes

  • coordinate the appropriate services required to ensure the Minister is positioned to deliver the priorities set out in the Ministerial Charter Letter for the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers

  • pursue with transparency, the administration of the departments legislation as set out below to promote their purpose, encouraging innovation through understanding of the principal responsibilities required to deliver the Queensland Government's objectives for the community

  • model to the highest level, the standards of ethical behaviour operating with transparency in decision making, establishing consistency for the application of these practices

  • lead through awareness, demonstrating clear rationale to exemplary problem solving and decision-making practices, encouraging the sectors ongoing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
